Myanmar KarteFlights

Up till now (december 2015) there are still no direct flights from Europe, Japan or Australia to Yangon. Flights from abroad are available from Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi by Airasia, Nokair, Bangkokair, Thai Airways, Malaysian Airlines, Jetstar, Tigerair, Silkair and Vietnam Airlines

The shortest and cheapest way is from Bangkok Don Mueang airport by Airasia or Nokair.

The international airport Mingaladon is located 20 km north of the Yangon city center. The terminal (both international and domestic) is under construction for extension. In a few years a new and bigger airport should be opened between Yangon and Bago.

From the airport to the center of Yangon taxis need about one hour depending on the traffic situation. The price is 10.000 Kyat (appr. 10 US-dollars). Buses drive for only 200 Kyat, but the bus stop is a bit out of the terminal area.

Visa

Every tourist needs a visa to enter Myanmar for a max 28 days stay. The visa can be applied at home conutry or online. The online fee is 50 US-Dollars and it is available online (sent by email) in a few days, if the necessary documents are available and uploaded (application form, pass photo, online payment).

Another option is to apply for the visa in Bangkok at the Myanmar embassy (132 Sathorn Nuea Road; open only 9-12 on working days; pick up only 15.30-16.30; Karte anzeigen ). This option is much cheaper, but much more complicated, and it is always very full there.

Traveling from Yangon to other places

Every place in Myanmar can be reached from Yangon using airplanes, buses, trains or taxis.Allthough trains can not be recommended, because they are old, slow, full, dirty and mostly delayed.

The domestic airport is located next to the international terminal in northern Yangon. All national airlines operate from here and connect Yangon with every major city in the country: Yangon Airways, Air Myanmar, AirMandalay e.g. fly to Mandalay, Thandwe, Bagan (= Thaung U), Inle, Mergui, Dawei or Kawthaung. AirBagan flies to other destinations in the north. And more small airlines add their services like Asian Wings, Golden Myanmar, Yadanarpon, Myanmar National Airlines and Air KBZ.

Buses start from either the northern bus terminal Aung Mingalar towards northern destinations or Dagon Ayer bus terminal in the west (Hlaing Thar Yar township) to western destinations on the coast or in the Ayeyarvaddy delta. It is a one hour taxi drive to the bus terminals from city center, when traffic is normal. Bus tickets can be bought at the terminal right at the busstop.

It may be worth while and clever to use a taxi for shorter distances and with more than two people, especially when heading east or southwards. Many taxi drivers are waiting for the oportunity to drive longer distances, and they are good guides when speaking some english. But due to the bad street conditions taxis are not much faster than buses. The big opportunity is to catch them up from the hotel without going to the bus terminals first.
